Selånger – In English
Walk the ancient Route of Saint Olav
- from the Swedish coast of the Baltic Sea to the Norwegian coast of the Atlantic Ocean. The starting point is in the parish of Selånger, just a few kilometers west of the city of Sundsvall. Communications by air or train from many European Airports and cities are excellent!
The route starts at the Harbour of Saint Olav in the parish of Selånger. There you can get information and good advice for your pilgrimage, whether you are going on foot, by bike or on horseback. The parish of Selånger also arranges a guided pilgrimage on foot the first Sunday of July, every year – a tradition that started eleven years ago!

Background:
Selånger – Beginning of Saint Olav’s route to the battlefield in Stikklestad, where he (Olav Haraldsson) was killed the 29th of July 1030 AD. One year later he was declared to be a saint by the Bishop Grimkjell of Trondheim. The pilgrimages started almost at once and the Route of Saint Olav was probably one of the most popular, at least for the pilgrims from Sweden and Finland.
All pilgrimage was forbidden after the Lutheran Reformation in the 16th Century but today the pilgrims are coming to Trondheim again, both catholics and protestants, now walking peacefuly together
